Liposuction in St. Louis & Chesterfield, MO

Liposuction St Louis | Dr. Judith Gurley

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the leading cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in our country, and has been for awhile. The goal of this procedure is to remove unwanted fat cells from a localized area of the body.

Liposuction is performed on the following areas:

  • Breast
  • Abdomen
  • Hips & thighs
  • Back knees
  • Chin & neck
  • Male chest

The procedure may be combined with others, such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery), breast reduction, breast lift, and facelift.

The Liposuction Procedure

There are different ways to perform liposuction, but the most effective way is using a cannula to physically suck out the fat. When this is completed the fat cells are removed and do not return.

Traditionally, the procedure is performed under anesthesia, both general and local. General anesthesia allows the patient to experience no pain. A saline solution is infused into the area that will be treated. This minimizes discomfort and bleeding, and also facilitates the gentle removal of fatty deposits. Fat cells are suctioned through a delicate cannula which is inserted through a small incision in the skin.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

Dr. Gurley performs ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Ultrasonic energy is dispersed through the fat breaking down the fibrous connections and allowing the fat to be more evenly and easily removed. A feathering technique is used for fat removal to maximize a smooth result.

Am I a good candidate for Liposuction?

If you have diet and exercise resistant fat pockets, are close to your ideal body weight, are concerned about your body proportions, and have good skin quality.

Lipo Side Effects

One of the greatest risks with this surgery is too much fat removal. Placement of drains may decrease the risk of fluid accumulations. It is better to leave a little extra fat behind than to take too much away because of the difficulty in replacing fat.

How much fat can be removed with Liposuction?

Liposuction can contour, remove fat and decrease inches like no other procedure. That’s because liposuction removes the fat between the skin and the muscle. The more fat there is, the more that can be removed. Care must be taken to not remove too much fat in order to prevent indentations and to keep patients healthy. An experienced Board Certified Surgeon knows how much fat can be removed safely and healthily.

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Its important to know that this surgery is intended for the removal of localized fat that is causing distortion.

Expected outcomes after Liposuction

After lipo, patients can expect a more shapely body contour with better proportions. The surgery can also reduce girth or bulge of an area and decrease inches. However, if you gain weight, existing fat cells will expand. In many cases, slight weight gain will not result in a return of the problem area. When a patient has liposuction they are encouraged to maintain healthy lifestyle habits in order to continue enjoying their beautiful shape for many years.

Non-Surgical Alternatives to Liposuction

As the technology advanced, several innovative devices have been developed to address unwanted fat. Patients interested in body sculpting can investigate everything from cryolipolysis to radio frequency. However, research confirms that no non-surgical fat-reducing treatment can come close to what is possible with surgical liposuction.

Weight loss may help, but many areas persist even after weight loss. Lipodissolve is a less aggressive and more subtle alternative for treating small areas of mild fat accumulation. Dr. Gurley is certified in Lipodissolve. Please see lipodissolve section for more information.

Liposuction Recovery

Dr. Gurley will discuss with you in great detail what to expect during the recovery process. Most patients may drive and return to work in 1-2 days and resume full activities in two weeks. A garment is recommended for 4-6 weeks to control swelling and speed recovery. Majority of swelling is gone in three weeks, but the healing process continues for months.
