Procedure

What does the procedure entail?

Gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure performed with anesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is typically short-lived, subsiding within about one week’s time. Because there is relatively little down time after the procedure, in most cases you can get back to your routine in a matter of days. However, soreness and swelling should dictate when exercise is resumed.

Rarely, liposuction alone will be enough to reduce gynecomastia. Often the tissue behind the nipple is firm and is not easily removed with liposuction alone. Waiting for resolution of the condition is considered if the cause is drug induced. If the condition has been present for more than two years it will unlikely resolve. A hormonal analysis by an endocrinologist can often rule out some known causes of male breast development.

Drains are used for a couple of days to help evacuate any fluid and to also aid in helping the tissues to stay flat. It is recommended that for two weeks, sports and aggressive activity should be avoided.

Dr. Gurley is an experienced plastic surgeon who has studied the causes and effects of gynecomastia. Many of her patients are in their teens or early twenties, but gynecomastia may be present or first appear later in life. It is important to select a board-certified plastic surgeon who has performed many of these corrective procedures and who has experience in contouring tissue. Dr. Gurley’s training and extensive experience give her a unique perspective for patients wanting to improve the masculinity of their chest shape. After surgery, the chest wall is flatter, there is a reduction in bulges seen through clothing, and the contour of the chest is more masculine. Men report feeling increased confidence in their appearance and less worry about situations in which their chest may be seen.
