Dr. Judith Gurley is passionate about keeping women safe when seeking plastic surgery. Breast augmentation brings so much joy and happiness to so many women world-wide. If you have breast implants there are a few things you should know. Recently the FDA black labeled a popular implant manufactured by Allergan called the “gummy bear implant” because of its association with cancer. The gummy bear implant refers to a highly cohesive shaped silicone implant that has aggressive texturing to help keep it in place. Over the years it has become apparent that a very small percentage of women with this implant or with a similarly textured implant made by Allergan will develop breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, BIA-ALCL. This lymphoma can be aggressive, but has a high cure rate if detected early. It is crucial for patients with these types of implants to perform breast surveillance which includes self exams, mammograms and regular physical examinations. Any patient with implants who experience swelling, pain, redness or distortion, should notify their primary care physician or plastic surgeon.
We specialize in breast implant removal, replacement and revisions. So if you or someone you know has concerns about breast implants please reach out and start a conversation.
